How to manage your own social media in 2026.
(yes it’s harder than ever)
It’s 9pm. Work’s done, you’re on the sofa, phone in hand, thinking “I should really post something.” You cobble together a caption, hit share and get four likes. One of them is your mum.
Or maybe it’s Sophie in the office who “does the socials”, squeezed in around her actual job, with no training and no plan.
Either way, if it feels like however much effort goes in, less comes back. You are not the only one that feels like this. Metricool has just published its round-up of the biggest challenges in social media for 2026, based on nearly 40 million posts and a survey of over 1,000 social media professionals. Even the people doing this full-time are finding it hard and you are trying to post as well as run an actual business.
Here’s what stood out.
Posting more no longer works
Accounts across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Pinterest published more content in 2025 and got less reach per post. A rather depressing thought!
The old advice of “just be consistent and post more” has quietly stopped working. What does work is content people react to, which means knowing your audience well enough to make something they’d stop for. That’s a strategy question, not a volume question.

Nobody watches past the first three seconds
Hooks matter more than production value, so stop chasing perfect and start grabbing attention. And here’s the bit most small businesses miss: carousels quietly overperform. On Instagram they drive more than three times the interactions of a single image, yet they’re one of the least used formats. If video feels like a mountain, a well-built carousel is a genuinely underused opportunity.
AI made content easy to produce and hard to make matter
Everyone can churn out posts with AI now, so everyone is, and it’s obvious so audiences scroll straight past it. Your face, your workshop, your customers. The stuff you think is too ordinary to post is exactly what cuts through. Use AI behind the scenes for ideas and first drafts. Keep a human at the front.
You don’t need to be everywhere
Two platforms done properly will beat five done in a panic, every single time. Pick the right two for your business, then adapt your content for each. And if you’re a local or hospitality business, don’t forget your Google Business Profile. Evidence shows that food orders through Google profiles jumped 78% in 2025, and a well-kept profile takes twenty minutes a month.
People are searching on social now
Your customers increasingly skip Google and search inside TikTok, Instagram and YouTube instead. That changes how you write: real keywords in captions, on-screen text, saying what you do out loud in videos. Useful, evergreen content keeps working months after you post it.

The part nobody talks about
One in three social media professionals rated their wellbeing as negative. Nearly half have considered quitting because of burnout. These are people whose only job is social media. If it feels heavy doing it on top of everything else, that’s not a personal failing. The job genuinely got harder, but help is at hand.
So what do you actually do?
The businesses coping well aren’t posting more. They’re working with intention and are clear on their audience, clear on their platforms, with a simple system that gets content made without eating the whole week.
That’s exactly the gap Social Honeycomb fills. I don’t take your social media off your hands. I make sure the time you already spend on it actually works. Together we develop a strategy built around your capacity if you’re solo, or proper training and monthly consultancy for whoever holds the accounts in your team. It costs a fraction of a new hire or an agency retainer, and the knowledge stays inside your business.
